Liberty Bar (aka Maigret on the Riviera) is one of George Simenon’s very early Inspector Maigret novels (1931). It is highly atmospheric, with the inspector sent from Paris to Cannes to investigate the murder of a former spy who had become involved with the resort’s underworld. Maigret is nearly seduced by the strange women, young and old, who run the Liberty Bar and hold the clues to the spy’s murder. The typeface of this sign evokes a bit of the book’s classic feeling.
